According to Fox News and the Sacramento Bee:

“The City of Sacramento, California’s legal department threatened to fine a popular retail store for public nuisance over numerous calls to police after thieves stole from its Land Park location multiple times, according to a report.

The Sacramento Bee reported that a person with knowledge of the warning who wanted to remain anonymous out of fear they could be retaliated against, said Sacramento officials warned they would issue an administrative fine to the Target at 2505 Riverside Boulevard in Land Park, during the past year.

A police spokesperson confirmed the location to the publication after being asked about the alleged warning.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/sacramento-city-attorney-reportedly-threatened-fine-target-store-reporting-theft-crimes

The United States legal system was established to define laws to promote a peaceable society, prosecute crime and protect those whose rights were violated. There are thousands of statutes at federal, state, and city levels defining what crime is and the penalty for the crime.

It is not the victim’s fault that a crime was perpetrated. The victim should not be penalized.

The logic of the City of Sacramento's legal department threat is absurd.

Does the department lack funds to do its job? Is it concerned about its perception with the public for not doing their job?

One of the Ten Commandments is “Thou shalt not steal.” If God recognizes stealing as a sin, why can’t the legal system recognize it as a crime.

Stores create jobs for citizens, they need to make a profit. Stolen goods cut into the profit. Many stores are accountable to the Board of Directors for effective management. Effective management cannot occur when the city is unable to stop theft.

According to Newsweek the following companies have had one or more stores closed in California due to Crime:

  1. 7-Eleven
  2. Whole Foods
  3. Nordstrom Target
  4. Starbucks and Subway
  5. Denny's
  6. In-N-Out Burger
  7. Macy's
  8. Taco Bell  https://www.newsweek.com/full-list-california-stores-closed-due-crime-1882924

The closure of these stores is disadvantageous to the citizens of California.

It is time for California cities to get crime under control.
